Shellharbour Unites Against Gender-Based Violence

Shellharbour City Council, in partnership with Zonta Club of Kiama-Shellharbour, has led a powerful community event to launch the global 16 Days of Activism campaign against domestic, family, and gender-based violence.

Held on Tuesday, 25 November at Shellharbour Civic Centre, the event brought together local leaders, advocates, and community members to raise awareness, honour victims and survivors, and inspire collective action toward a safer, more equal society.

The day began with a moving ceremony on the Civic Centre front lawn, honouring the lives lost to gender-based violence in NSW in the past year. Attendees then gathered inside for a panel discussion, hosted by local radio personality Bernie Hems.

Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the event highlighted the importance of collective action.

"Gender-based violence is a heartbreaking reality for too many families. Our community has come together to say enough is enough. We stand united in creating a safer, more respectful Shellharbour," Mayor Homer said.

"Events like this remind us that change starts with awareness and action. Together, we can make a difference."

Local service providers were on hand to share vital information and resources, helping attendees connect with support networks. The event concluded with an opportunity for community members to engage directly with experts and advocates.

The collaboration between Council and Zonta reflects a shared commitment to gender equality and community safety. By combining Council's local leadership with Zonta's global advocacy, the partnership ensures that awareness campaigns are backed by practical support and resources for those affected by violence.
