Shotgun and drugs seized after pursuit in Wallsend

A man has been charged with firearm and drug offences after a pursuit in Newcastle, NSW Police say.

About 3.35pm yesterday (Tuesday 2 January 2018), police were patrolling Sandgate Road, Wallsend, when they attempted to pull over a Holden Commodore sedan.

The vehicle accelerated away and a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit was terminated due to the manner of driving, however a short time later the vehicle was located on Lorna Street, Waratah West, the driver having fled into swamp land.

Police from the Dog Unit attended and a 31-year-old man was located hiding in a creek.

It was discovered the man was a disqualified driver and was also subject to a firearms prohibition order.

Upon searching him, police allegedly located a small amount of methyl amphetamine.

Police also searched the vehicle, locating a 12 gauge sawn off shotgun.

The man was taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with possess prohibited drug (x2), drive whilst disqualified, police pursuit (Skye’s Law), possess prohibited firearm, and breach firearm prohibition order (x2).

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Wednesday 3 January 2018).
