Today, the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, met with Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Sayed, Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs of Qatar, to discuss Canada-Qatar economic relations. The meeting was held as part of Minister Sidhu's visit to the Gulf with Canadian senior-level business leaders.
As the third-largest economy in the Gulf region, Qatar presents significant opportunities for Canadian companies seeking growth and diversification. As Canada pursues its goal to double its non-U.S. exports over the next decade, Minister Sidhu highlighted Canada's interest in collaborating with Qatar in several sectors, including advanced manufacturing and aerospace, information and communications technology, life sciences, energy transition, infrastructure, agri-food and clean technologies.
Minister Sidhu and Minister Al Sayed discussed the ongoing foreign investment promotion and protection agreement negotiations and the importance of their eventual conclusion, which will foster increased commercial partnerships and encourage investments that create new opportunities that benefit Canadian and Qatari businesses alike.
