Slacks Creek Rugby League Club has added another trophy to the cabinet - a new clubhouse.
The $1.4 million clubhouse is a welcome addition for a club that has been a fixture on the Logan sporting landscape for more than 40 years.
The new facility was opened today in front of club members.
City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said it was fantastic to see the club rewarded for all its hard work and commitment in recent years.
"The club has been without a fully functioning clubhouse for a number of years and the committee has worked extremely hard to keep things going," Cr Power said.
"They have improved the playing surface of the field and maintained the club's membership numbers.
"I am pleased that the committee will now see the rewards of its hard work by having a new clubhouse. I know how much this means to the club."
Slacks Creek Rugby League Club Secretary Timothy Burke thanked Logan City Council, the State Government, the NRL and QRL for funding the construction.
"We haven't had a fully functioning clubhouse for a number of years so the new facility will make a huge difference to our rugby league community," Mr Burke said.
"Slacks Creek Rugby League Club enjoys incredible community support with kids growing up to be involved at committee level and then their children playing in teams."
The club has more than 187 registered players ranging from under 6 to under 17, including a number of girls' teams.
Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said the new clubhouse will make a massive difference to the club in recovering from the global pandemic.
"COVID-19 threw a spanner in the works for sporting clubs across Queensland but, just like their players do out on the field, the Slacks Creek Lions haven't stopped giving it their all.
"As we continue to focus on restoring the economy and jobs from the impact of the pandemic, it's also so important that local clubs like the Lions have a quality home to flesh out their game plan to get more kids involved in sport."
QRL Managing Director, Robert Moore congratulated the Slacks Creek club on their new clubhouse and acknowledged the contribution made by the Logan City Council and the Queensland Government.
"This is a terrific outcome that reinforces the strength of the Queensland Government Footy Facilities Fund and the results this whole-of-game initiative continues to deliver to rugby league clubs in our local communities," Mr Moore said.
"The Slacks Creek club has been a proud part of their local community for more than 40 years and this development sets the club up nicely for the future."
The new clubhouse was jointly funded by Logan City Council ($1.1 million) Council and the Queensland Government Footy Facilities Fund ($300,000).
The Fund is a joint initiative of the National Rugby League, Queensland Rugby League and the State Government, designed to improve the quality, access and condition of community rugby league facilities across Queensland.
