Dept of Agriculture

Australia has assumed the Chair of the International Grains Council (IGC), leading discussions on global grain trade.

Deputy Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Policy Matt Lowe said Australia's position as Chair was a both a privilege and an opportunity.

"The IGC is an important institution. Made up of 29 countries, it encourages transparency and international cooperation in grains' trading," Mr Lowe said.

"We will hold the position as Chair for the 2025-26 financial year, and Australia will be represented by DAFF's Agriculture Counsellor in London, Dr Amy Little.

"Our priorities as Chair include promoting rules-based trade, removing barriers to trade, food security and sustainable agriculture.

"International bodies like the IGC are a means for creating stable, open trade between markets, which in turn underpins food security.

"We know from ABARES' research that the best thing we can do for global food security is encourage open and free trade, without trade barriers in the way.

"Australia's grains, oilseeds and pulses industry was worth an estimated $26 billion in 2024-25, and the grains sector has an important role to play in feeding the world.

"It's a privilege to be able to uphold and promote the values and aims of the IGC on the international stage."

President of the International Grain Trade Coalition (IGTC) and CEO of Grain Trade Australia Pat O'Shannassy said the IGTC welcomed Australia's leadership.

"IGTC supports the need for open and predictable trade. We look forward to working with IGC and Dr Amy Little to progress shared priorities and objectives in relation to rules-based and open trade, food security and trade facilitative solutions to trade barriers."
