State Highway Patrol picked up a P-plater travelling more than 50km/h over the limit in Laverton this morning.
The 25-year-old driver was detected travelling at an alleged speed of 156km/h in the emergency lane on the Princes Freeway about 6.30am.
The Braybrook man has been charged with driving in a manner dangerous, driving at a speed dangerous, exceeding the speed limit, driving in an emergency lane and overtaking in an unsafe manner.
He is expected to be charged on summons.
His vehicle, a Volkswagen Polo sedan, was impounded at a cost of $999.52.
