Spill of Harvested Poppy Material – Meander Valley Rd and Bass Hwy Westbury, TAS

Approx. 8.47pm on Friday 24/2/17 Tasmania Police located a spill of harvested poppy heads through the township of Westbury on the Meander Valley Rd, William Street and onto the Bass Hwy towards Deloraine.   The spill consisted of dry poppy heads and covered a distance of about 3.5 kilometres.  A further minor spill was also located near the Deloraine, Tasmania Police say.

An investigation is being conducted to identify the party responsible for the spill. A clean-up operation is underway to ensure that all poppy material is removed from the area.

The public are advised that poppy material is toxic and if consumed can be fatal. Should any person locate any remnants from the spill they are advised not to handle the poppies and are asked to contact Tasmania Police on 131444 to arrange collection.
