It's been a very wet few weeks, with Whitehorse and greater Melbourne recording the wettest spring in a decade.
The spring rain has been great, but it has made many of our parks too wet to mow, impacting our regular mowing schedules.
Our mowing team maintains parks, bushland and reserves throughout Whitehorse. Nature strip and roadside grass maintenance is a shared responsibility between Whitehorse City Council and VicRoads.
While we typically follow a 3-week mowing cycle, the weather can delay or limit our usual schedule.
Why mowing may be delayed:
Wet ground conditions - When heavy rain saturates the ground, it becomes unsafe for both our staff and equipment to access mowing areas. Using machinery on waterlogged surfaces can cause lasting damage to turf and prevent healthy regrowth. In some cases, we may only be able to mow portions of a reserve, returning to complete the rest once conditions improve.
Rapid grass growth - The combination of sunshine and rainfall accelerates growth during spring. When grass grows taller than usual, mowing takes additional time.
We understand that well-maintained green spaces matter to our community. Thank you for your patience as we navigate the changeable weather conditions while keeping our parks and reserves in good shape.
