St Helens vessel incident

A vessel which ran aground near St Helens after experiencing difficulties last night has been refloated and safely returned to shore earlier this morning.

Police received a report of a concern for welfare last night after a man on board a vessel did not return from a boating trip.

Police including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, conducted a search of the area, with the vessel being located on the southern spit near Humbug Point about 3.30am.

"Police verified that the single male occupant was safe, however, due to the environment and conditions at the time, were unable to winch him from the boat," Inspector Michael Johnston said.

The vessel refloated with the high tide and the vessel returned safely to shore about 7am.

"Boaters are reminded of the need to ensure they have all safety equipment, including life jackets, and good communication systems," Inspector Johnston said.
