I have today spoken to the Mayor of Burnie City Council, Steve Kons, following the announcement this week of a number of measures the Council will take to improve its financial position.
The cultural places impacted by this announcement are much loved and used by the community, as well as visitors to the region.
I have also requested the Director of Local Government within the Department of Premier and Cabinet to make contact with the Council.
He will gain a fuller understanding of the Council’s circumstances and also whether there is any transitional assistance the State Government may be able to consider providing to the Council while it implements these difficult measures.
This may include assisting the Council to enable some of the facilities to re-open earlier than currently planned.
Following the swearing in of a new Government, I will arrange to meet with the Mayor to discuss the advice received from the Director of Local Government and any transitional assistance the State Government may be able to provide.
