State service stands against violence against women

The Hodgman Majority Liberal Government is taking a strong stance against family violence and remains committed to ending violence against women once and for all.

There is no excuse for family violence in any situation, and everyone has a role to play in putting an end to it.

To mark White Ribbon Day, the Tasmanian Government is again hosting the White Ribbon Walk, a show of unity on an issue that impacts on the lives of so many people in the Tasmanian community.

Under our first Family Violence Action Plan, we made a significant investment of $26 million towards a whole of Government response to family violence.

Our plan is focussed on changing the attitudes and behaviours that lead to family violence; supporting families affected by violence; and strengthening legal responses to family violence to hold perpetrators to account for their violence behaviours.

The Government is now investing an additional $20.2 million towards family violence initiatives including $18 million towards the next Family Violence Action Plan.

Today also marks the endorsement of the Department of State Growth as having achieved White Ribbon accreditation. This is the sixth State Government department to be White Ribbon accredited.

Accreditation recognises an ongoing commitment to creating cultural change and preventing and responding to violence.

Importantly, accreditation also recognises that these organisations have put in place processes and systems to stamp out violence against women in the workplace and supports those who may be experiencing family violence at home.

The Government is committed to making improvements in the lives of all women and girls through addressing the scourge of family violence and achieving more equitable outcomes for women and girls.
