Statement by Canada on newly announced power-sharing agreement in Sudan

From: Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:

"Canada views the news of the interim power-sharing agreement between the Transitional Military Council and the Forces of Freedom and Change in Sudan as a positive step forward. We would like to thank the African Union and Ethiopian envoys on mediating this agreement.

"Canada encourages both sides to swiftly proceed with the appointment of a transitional government and reach a final agreement on the outstanding issues, including the release of political prisoners, accountability for human rights violations and the need to ensure that the voices and perspectives of women are articulated during this transition.

"The success of this transition will be critical to ensuring that the people of Sudan realize their goal of a democratic, peaceful and prosperous country."
