Statement By Minister Of National Defence On Start Of Cyber Security Awareness Month

Communications Security Establishment Canada

"It's no secret that cyber threats are becoming more common, more complex and more disruptive. Malicious actors looking to serve their own objectives, turn a profit or impact our way of life, exploit our systems and data to achieve their goals. While the threats are real, Canadians are not defenceless. Armed with the right knowledge and tools, they can protect themselves online - and October is the perfect time to start.

"October marks the start of Cyber Security Awareness Month (Cyber Month) in Canada, an opportunity to get cyber safe for future you.

"Just as cyber threats continue to evolve, so do we, and Get Cyber Safe, the national public awareness campaign led by the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSE), is no exception. This year's emphasis is on building good cyber security practices today for a safer and more secure tomorrow.

"Cyber Month is a chance to get back to basics - practicing good password etiquette by using unique and complex passphrases, turning on multi-factor authentication, enabling automatic updates, and learning about new and evolving threats, like AI-generated phishing messages. These small actions can have a big impact. After all, cyber security is about more than just protecting devices, it's about safeguarding the everyday lives of people across Canada.

"This Cyber Month, I encourage all Canadians to take simple, proactive steps to help improve their cyber security habits, not only to protect themselves but also the digital systems and communities we all rely on. Start by building strong cyber safe habits today so that, together, we can prepare for whatever challenges the future may bring. By staying informed with advice and guidance from CSE, its Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, and Get Cyber Safe, we can help create a safer, stronger Canada for everyone."
