Today, Monday 7 September, Stats NZ welcomed Anton Youngman to the role of Deputy Government Statistician/Deputy Chief Executive, Census Transition.
The new, fixed-term role provides dedicated leadership and expertise to advance the work to prepare for the next census and respond to the questions and recommendations arising from the Justice Committee's consideration of the Data and Statistics (Census) Amendment Bill.
"I am delighted to welcome Anton to the Stats NZ leadership team, with a key focus on supporting our Census Programme," says Government Statistician and Stats NZ Chief Executive Colin Lynch.
"Anton brings a wealth of experience and skills that I know will provide vital support and expertise as we continue to work to deliver for New Zealand."
Mr Youngman joins Stats NZ from the Ministry of Defence on secondment, where he has served as Deputy Secretary for Strategy Management and Assessment since 2022. Prior to this he was the General Manager, Sector Insights at the Ministry of Justice, where he was responsible for performance reporting, data analytics, research and evaluation across the justice sector and the judiciary.
He has extensive experience in strategy and transformation leadership in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, a background in international mathematical modelling, and qualifications in mathematics, statistics, and operational research.
Mr Youngman will have a focus on providing strategic advice to support implementation and organisational readiness.
Mr Youngman joins Stats NZ from 7 September to 31 December 2026.
