Stats NZ releases experimental indicators about building timeframes

We have released experimental measures of the timeframes experienced on a selection of building projects across the country, Stats NZ said today.

These measures were produced with support from the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment.

Experimental building indicators: March 2022 quarter uses inspections and code compliance certificate data for a selection of building consent authorities to provide an estimate of construction timelines and completion rates.

"With these experimental building indicators, we are looking for feedback from our customers on which insights are useful and how the information could be improved to better suit their needs," construction statistics manager Michael Heslop said.

"This is a one-off proof of concept. At this stage we are not able to commit to further data updates."

Experimental building indicators: March 2022 quarter includes data from 22 building consent authorities, covering over 40 percent of building consents issued in New Zealand, and about 60 percent of new homes consented.

The statistics show how long different building projects take to reach the key milestones of first inspection, final inspection, and code compliance certificate. For example, recently consented homes have taken about four months on average to reach their first inspection.

The most recently available data about completions is for new homes consented in the December 2020 quarter. These homes took 15 months on average to reach their final inspection, and a further two months to receive a code compliance certificate.

Building consents for stand-alone houses tend to reach final inspection and code compliance certification more quickly than consents for multi-unit homes (such as apartment buildings, townhouses, and retirement villages).

Experimental building indicators: March 2022 quarter was produced by Stats NZ with the support of the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment, Simpli, and all contributing building consent authorities.
