Northern Grampians Shire Council commends the Stawell Athletic Club for making a tough decision to suspend the 2020 Stawell Gift.
The Athletic Club announced yesterday the Gift will not go ahead over the Easter weekend this year but options for re-scheduling are being considered.
The decision comes following the State Government calling a State of Emergency in Victoria giving the Chief Health Officer powers to cancel gatherings of more than 500 people and enforce 14-day isolation requirements for all travellers entering Australia.
Under these extraordinary circumstances, it would be irresponsible for the running of the Gift to go ahead on 11 April as originally planned.
The health and wellbeing of our community and visitors to our region is of the utmost importance and council completely supports the Athletic Club in this decision to protect public health.
Northern Grampians Shire Council will work with the Stawell Athletic Club and the Victorian Government to help decide if the event can be rescheduled in the near future.
The 'Off the Track Easter Street Party' on Easter Saturday and the 'On the Track' and 'At the Track' corporate Stawell Gift events have also been suspended.
