Stonnington shines a light on road safety

Each night from 6 to 12 May the Malvern Town Hall will be bathed in yellow light as a symbol of Council's support for National Road Safety Week. And, throughout the week, Council and Victoria Police vehicles in the City of Stonnington will fly yellow ribbons to indicate our commitment to safer roads within the city.

City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos, said Council is a proud supporter of the annual week-long road safety initiative.

"National Road Safety Week's motto 'Drive so Others Survive' serves to remind us of how our actions and behaviours, particularly when behind the wheel, are crucial to ensure that we, and other road users, remain safe.

"With more than 1,200 lives lost on Australian roads every year, National Road Safety Week is an opportunity for us to reflect on this critical issue and the devastating consequences it has for far too many families," Cr Stefanopoulos added.

"Council is fully committed to making Stonnington roads safer for all road users, and has recently adopted a 'Towards Zero' Road Safety Strategy that will guide our decision-making on road safety initiatives over the next five years.

"As a Council we will continue to identify and implement road safety initiatives to help us achieve our goal of zero road fatalities.

"Council and Victoria Police vehicles operating in Stonnington will display yellow ribbons and the Malvern Town Hall will be lit with yellow light, in honour of those we have lost and as a demonstration of our pledge to make the roads safer for everyone," said Cr Stefanopoulos.

National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative by Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group in memory of Sarah Frazer who was killed alongside a tow truck driver in the emergency lane of a New South Wales highway in 2012.
