Supporting And Growing Our Midwifery Workforce

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government is continuing our strong focus on supporting and growing our midwifery workforce, with a new midwifery strategy released for public consultation.

Midwifery Matters is the Tasmanian Midwifery Workforce Strategy for 2025-2030, setting out a bold and innovative roadmap for the future of our midwifery workforce and midwifery in Tasmania.

It focuses on the importance of midwifery through the voices of Tasmanian women, and examines the matters that shape midwifery, including workforce, education, national policy and system design.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said our Government highly values all midwives across Tasmania and acknowledges the vital role they play in delivering high quality maternity care to mothers and babies.

"Midwives are absolutely critical to maternity care, and we know that supporting, valuing and strengthening the midwifery workforce is essential to delivering continuity of care and improving outcomes,'' Minister Archer said.

"Importantly, this draft strategy is shaped by the experiences, needs and priorities of women and families, and will be enhanced with their input to ensure maternity care is respectful, safe, and person-centred.

"Our Liberal Government is delivering for Tasmania, with the draft strategy outlining 20 actions to meaningfully strengthen and expand services that have been designed to ensure Tasmanian women and families benefit from a responsive, sustainable and future-focused maternity system."

Consultation is now open, with online written feedback and public and internal consultation forums occurring until 5 October 2025.
