Supporting women through leadership and participation action plan

Sarah Courtney,Minister for Women

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is working hard to ensure all women can achieve their aspirations and participate in decisions that affect their lives and communities.

That's why we are today releasing the Leadership and Participation for Women Action Plan 2021-23.

The action plan has three strategic priorities:

  • Supporting skills development and employment pathways;
  • Facilitating leadership development; and
  • Promoting recognition.

This will be achieved through increasing opportunities for women in the workforce and in leadership, as well as through promoting and recognising the contribution of Tasmanian women and ensuring the impacts of COVID-19 on women are addressed.

This action plan has been informed by feedback from the Tasmanian Women's Council and Government agencies, along with recommendations from the Premier's Economic and Social Recovery Advisory Council, research findings and statistical data.

The Leadership and Participation for Women Action Plan 2021-23 is the third in a series of action plans under our Tasmanian Women's Strategy 2018-21, and is intended to build upon and complement other initiatives, including the Women on Boards Strategy 2020-2025.

The Women in Leadership Scholarship Program is an initiative under this plan, which offers recipients the opportunity to learn governance and leadership skills and to gain a greater understanding of director's duties and responsibilities, to help them become effective members of boards and committees.

Diversity in leadership and decision making will benefit all of us and I congratulate the six successful applicants who have been selected to undertake the AICD Foundations of Directorship Course in 2021. This takes the total number of scholarship recipients to 87 since 2015.

Today is International Women's Day, which is an opportunity to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women.

The theme this year is #ChooseToChallenge. A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.
