Suspected drowning at Wollongong

An investigation is underway after a man's body was located on a beach in Wollongong earlier today.

About 6.15am (Tuesday 11 February 2020), police and emergency services were called to Cliff Road, North Wollongong following reports a man's body was found on the beach.

A crime scene was established and an investigation commenced by officers from Wollongong Police District.

Initial inquiries suggest the man went swimming after midnight after drinking with friends. The man's personal belongings were located on the beach earlier today.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

While he is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be a 28-year-old Illawarra man.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
