Suspicious fire in Ashburton

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a suspicious fire at an apartment block in Ashburton last night, Victoria Police say.

Transit Safety Division and Protective Service Officers on patrol at the near-by Alamein Railway Station heard an explosion just after 10pm and rushed to the scene finding a top floor apartment ablaze.

All residents in the adjoining apartments were evacuated as MFB extinguished the flames.

The fire, which is being treated as suspicious, caused extensive damage to the building.

An arson chemist will attend the scene tomorrow to determine the cause of the fire.

A 38-year-old Ashburton man was arrested at the scene for unrelated weapon offences.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
