Police are investigating after a suspicious item was located near Lake Illawarra last night, NSW Police say.
About 7.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 11 April 2018), officers from Lake Illawarra Police District located the item in a vehicle on Nottingham Street.
A police operation was conducted for several hours before concluding when the item was safely secured.
As part of the operation, several homes were evacuated as a safety precaution.
Specialist officers examined the item before it was seized.
Residents have since returned to their homes.
Inquiries continue.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
