Swan Hill Rural City Council is calling on the community to join the annual Walk Against Family Violence on Tuesday, 25 November at 11am, marking the beginning of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
The walk, coordinated by the Rotary Club of Swan Hill, is an opportunity for residents, services, schools and organisations to stand together, raise awareness, and show support for victim-survivors of family violence.
Mayor Cr Stuart King said the event was a powerful demonstration of unity and a clear message that family violence is never acceptable.
"Every person has the right to feel safe - at home, at work and in the community.
"By walking together, we show that Swan Hill will not tolerate violence in any form, and we stand with those who have been impacted," Cr King said.
Council's Director of Community and Cultural Services, Bruce Myers highlighted the significance of the annual campaign.
"Family violence thrives in silence. When the whole community shows up, it breaks that silence and gives strength to those who need it most.
"The 16 Days of Activism highlights that every one of us has a role to play. Prevention begins with conversations, education and the courage to stand up for respect. Our community walk is an important step toward creating a safer, more supportive future for all, Mr Myers said.
Participants are encouraged to wear orange, the international colour of the campaign, symbolising a brighter future free from violence.
The 16 Days of Activism runs from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day). Throughout the campaign, Council and local organisations will share resources, stories and events aimed at prevention and education.
Community members of all ages are invited to attend the walk and demonstrate their commitment to a safe, respectful and inclusive community.
