A Sydney woman is due to appear before Fairfield Local Court on 17 June for allegedly using social media to threaten a federal parliamentarian.
The AFP's National Security Investigations (NSI) team started an investigation in March, 2026, into a social media post that allegedly contained a threat to a parliamentarian.
The investigation traced the allegedly threatening post to a Yennora woman, 24.
The AFP executed a search warrant on 9 April, 2026, at a Yennora home, where a mobile phone was seized and will be subject to forensic examination.
The woman was served with a court attendance notice yesterday (24 April 2026) to face nine charges of using a carriage service to make a threat to kill or cause serious harm, contrary to section 474.15 of the Criminal Code (Cth).
The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.
AFP Acting Inspector Joel Rivers said it is an offence to threaten violence against high office holders.
"Anonymous accounts do not protect individuals from being identified,'' a/Insp Rivers said.
"The AFP has the tools and skills to identify individuals who use social media to threaten federal parliamentarians."
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion.
