The Allan Labor Government has raided the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) to prop up its State Budget as the road toll continues to sit above the 5-year average.
Buried in Budget Paper 5, it is revealed that $2.4 billion will be ripped from the TAC and put into consolidated revenue, rather than reinvested into road safety initiatives or used to reduce registration fees for Victorians.
This comes as the state's roads continue face disrepair after a decade of financial mismanagement under Labor has resulted in record debt and record taxes.
Shadow Minister for WorkCover and the TAC, Cindy McLeish, said: "Only Labor could manage to raid the budget of a transport accident injury compensation and road safety body whilst overseeing worsening road conditions and an increasing road toll, as Victorians pay record taxes.
"If the Allan Labor Government was serious about road safety and the wellbeing of Victorian motorists, it would use these funds to fix our state's roads or reduce registration fees.
"Statutory bodies must not be used as cash cows for Labor to skim money off the top to pour into its debt black hole. Labor cannot manage money, and Victorians are paying the price."
