Tasmanian Labor Demands Transparency in Clarence Council Probe

Tas Labor

Minister Nic Street needs to reveal exactly what is happening with regards to his Government's investigation of Clarence Councillors.

Clarence Councillors were written to on November 13 and asked to declare any gifts or donations of $50 or more for the period between 1 January 2022 and now.

The letter - which I understand has only been sent to Clarence Councillors - spells out that it is an offence to not declare gifts and donations under section 56A of the Local Government Act and that any responses by councillors may be used as evidence.

At least one councillor has gone on the record about this correspondence - so what exactly is going on?

In the interests of public transparency and confidence the Minister should provide an update to ratepayers and concerned citizens on exactly what he is investigating and why.

To not provide an update only undermines public confidence in the council and its operations.
