We are set to begin important ground improvement works at RJ Rowley Reserve in Rye, ensuring the much-loved community facility is in top shape ahead of the 50th running of the Rye Gift, the township's iconic event.
Starting today, Monday 8 September, the reserve will be closed for an eight-week period while staff undertake extensive surface remediation, including scarifying, coring, topdressing, oversowing and other treatments. Temporary fencing will be installed to protect the works and allow the playing surface time to recover.
We recently met with some of the reserve's user groups, with strong support received from the cricket club, despite the works impacting the start of their playing season. With footy season recently coming to a close, there are no disruptions to the football club.
The reserve will remain closed to the public for the full eight weeks to ensure the ground has the best chance of recovery. Clubs will return gradually after the closure period, with the public welcomed back once works are fully complete.
Quote attributable to Mayor Councillor Anthony Marsh:
"RJ Rowley Reserve is a special place for Rye and the wider Peninsula. With the backing of our local clubs and community, we can deliver upgrades that will benefit players, spectators and visitors alike. Together, we're ensuring the reserve is ready for the Rye Gift and looking after its long-term future."
