The Finocchiaro CLP Government has launched the Northern Territory Visitor Economy Strategy 2032, as new data confirms the Territory is leading the nation in visitor and expenditure growth. The Strategy sets a clear path to grow the visitor economy to $3 billion and 1.7 million trips by 2032, with strong regional plans for the Top End and Central Australia.Developed with industry and backed by national partners, this is a long-term plan to convert growing interest into real economic outcomes and local jobs.
Nearly 100 tourism and hospitality leaders gathered at Alice Springs Desert Park this week for the official launch.
Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Marie-Clare Boothby said the Strategy was about leading with a clear plan for the future.
"We know the industry is facing uncertainty, from rising costs to global disruptions and weather events. Our industry feels that pressure every day," Ms Boothby said.
"But this strategy is not about reacting in the short term. It is about staying disciplined, focused and working together to grow the Territory for the long term."
"This is a plan built with operators, regional tourism organisations, Traditional Owners and national partners who have helped shape it, and every dollar we invest is aligned to delivering it."
The Strategy focuses on converting strong global interest into sustained growth by increasing visitor yield, extending the season and growing length of stay.
New Tourism Research Australia data shows the NT is outperforming nationally, with growth in international visits (15%), international spend (12%), domestic visits (18%) and domestic spend (58%).
"These are not just numbers, they are full hotels, busy restaurants, booked tours and more Territorians in jobs."
Tourism Australia Managing Director Robin Mack has said that the Strategy aligns strongly with the national roadmap.
"The Northern Territory has a critical role to play in Australia's tourism future," Mr Mack said.
"This strategy aligns with our focus on high-yield visitors and delivering experiences you cannot find anywhere else in the world."
Ms Boothby said this alignment positions the Territory to capture global demand.
"People do not travel halfway around the world for something ordinary. They come for places like the Top End and Red Centre, and we are ready to deliver."
The Strategy sets clear regional targets to grow the visitor economy across the Territory, with $2 billion and 1.3 million trips in the Top End, and $1 billion and 600,000 trips in Central Australia by 2032.
"This is about building a resilient visitor economy that supports jobs and gives operators certainty to invest and grow." Ms Boothby said.
"In our year of growth, certainty and security, we are backing a clear plan, backing industry, and backing the Territory."
