"The Angry Birds Movie" nests atop box office with $39M debut

- "The Angry Birds Movie" claimed the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office with a strong debut of an estimated $39 million. Worldwide, "Angry Birds" earned approximately $94 million this weekend, bringing its current total to $150 million, AceShowbiz reports.

The animated movie based on the hit video game series dethroned "Captain America: Civil War" which had placed first for two weeks in a row. "Civil War" earned around $33.1 million to bring its domestic total to a huge $347.4 million so far. Worldwide, the third installment of the "Captain America" film series surpassed the $1 billion milestone, being Disney's tenth billion-dollar club member and the 19th highest-grossing of all-time globally.

"Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" landed in the third place with an estimated $21.8 million for its domestic debut. "The Nice Guys" came fourth with around $11.3 million during its first weekend in U.S. theaters. Meanwhile, "The Jungle Book" nabbed the fifth place with approximately $11 million, bringing its domestic total to $327.5 million.

Internationally, "X-Men: Apocalypse" debuted with an estimated $103.3 million. The ninth installment of the "X-Men" film series is coming to U.S. theaters on Friday, May 27.
