The Band of the South Australia Police - our new Cultural Icon

The much-loved Band of the South Australia Police has been recognised as a State Cultural Icon. The prestigious honour is a first for our State, bestowed by The National Trust of South Australia in a newly formed category to recognise Cultural Icons, according to SA Police.

The 35 member Band was presented with a certificate marking the honour at a special ceremony today at the Police Barracks, attended by the Commissioner of Police Grant Stevens, the President of the National Trust of SA Professor Norman Etherington and the Chief Officer of the National Trust of SA Mr Darren Peacock.

The Cultural Icon status acknowledges the work of the Band in supporting community events and delivering safety messages to school students.

The Band’s role in police and military Tattoos in Australia and overseas and in providing ceremonial support at official State events since formation in 1884 was also taken into account.

The National Trust of SA has a list of State Heritage Icons acknowledging companies, products, events and items that are unique to South Australia and contribute to the identity of South Australia.

The Police Greys of SAPOL’s Mounted Operations Unit have been previously listed as State Heritage Icons.
