- The Strokes headlined the first day of Governors Ball on the June 3 night, playing new material at a festival for the first time, NME reports.
The New York City band took to the main stage on Randall's Island around 9:30pm and played a set consisting of songs from across their first four albums, plus new tracks from the 'Future Present Past' EP, which was released on June 3.
The group, led by Julian Casablancas, also covered The Clash's 'Clampdown' for the first time since 2004. "This is a Clash song we used to cover," said Casablancas by way of introduction.
The Strokes also paid tribute to Brett Kilroe, the Calgary artist who designed the artwork for their debut album 'Is This It' amongst other records and passed away earlier this year after a four year fight with cancer. The band dedicated 'Electricityscape' to the artist, whose photo was shown on the big screens with his artwork slowly appearing around him.
After 'Hard To Explain', Casablancas introduced 'Juicebox' by saying "This is our last scheduled song of the night". Once the song finished, the band briefly left the stage before returning for one last song. "We stopped doing encores after our first three albums," Casablancas told the crowd before closing the night out with 'You Only Live Once'.
Governors Ball continues on June 4 with a headline set from The Killers.
