Manningham Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a theft from motor vehicle and subsequent deceptions in Bulleen on 4 May, Victoria Police say.
Investigators have been told a car parked on Kim Close was broken into and handbag containing credit cards was stolen between 5.50pm and 6.10pm.
A short time later the stolen credit cards were used at a supermarket in Heidelberg.
The offender is described as aged in his early 20s, perceived to be Caucasian with short brown hair and unshaven.
He was wearing a black baseball cap with white lettering, a maroon and grey coloured hoody, blue pants and grey coloured sneakers.
Police have released images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.
