Thousands of MDMA capsules seized, 13 charged with drug supply at Sydney music festival, NSW

Police have again expressed their disappointment after 13 people were charged with drug supply, and more than 3500 pills seized, at a music festival at Sydney Olympic Park yesterday, NSW Police say.

More than 14,000 people attended the Midnight Mafia Music Festival at Sydney Showground, which was held from 3pm until midnight yesterday (Saturday 5 May 2018).

A large police operation was conducted involving officers from the South West Metropolitan Region, with assistance from drug-detection dogs.

A total of 187 people were searched during the operation, resulting in the seizure of more than 3,500 MDMA capsules.

Thirteen people were subsequently arrested and charged with drug supply, while 32 people were issued court notices for drug possession.

During the event, 256 people sought medical treatment with three people taken to hospital for further treatment for drug-related health issues.

Commander of the South West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad, Detective Chief Inspector Gus Viera, said he is greatly concerned with the large number of pills seized.

"We saw more drugs seized today than recent events, one of the largest we’ve seen, which clearly shows our messaging is not getting through," Detective Chief Inspector Viera said.

"I am extremely disappointed with these results; however, we will continue to conduct these operations at upcoming festivals throughout the year.

"Those intent on bringing illicit drugs into these events will be caught, charged and put before the courts," Det Ch Inspector Viera said.

Significant arrests include:

  • A 21-year-old woman was arrested after she was found in possession of almost 1600 MDMA caps, along with an amount of cocaine. She was given bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on 25 May 2018.
  • A 21-year-old woman was charged with drug supply after she was found carrying nearly 550 pills. She was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Sunday 6 May 2018).
