Three charged & firearms seized following pursuit in Newcastle

Three men have been charged and firearms seized after a pursuit in Newcastle., NSW Police say

Just before 2pm on Tuesday (14 February 2017), officers from the Newcastle City Target Action Group attempted to stop a white Holden Commodore on Lake Road, Wallsend.

The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

Whilst travelling along Aries Way, Elermore Vale, an object was allegedly thrown from the vehicle.

The vehicle stopped in a cul-de-sac and the 48-year-old driver and a 31-year-old passenger were arrested.

Two other men ran from vehicle.

Following a search of Aries Way, police located and seized a shortened semi automatic rifle.

The two men were taken to Waratah Police Station.

The older man was charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, and two counts of possess prohibited drug

The younger man was charged with possess unauthorised prohibited firearm, possess unregistered firearm-prohibited firearm, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority, firearm etc found at premises-subject to prohibition order, drive with licence suspended, and acquire etc prohibited firearm-subject prohibition order

Both men appeared in Newcastle Local Court yesterday.

The 48-year-old man was remanded in custody to reappear today.

The 31-year-old man was remanded in custody to reappear in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 6 April 2017.

As part of their inquiries, police seized a mobile phone and reviewed a number of video files

About 10:30pm on Tuesday (14 February 2017), officers attended a unit in Wentworth Street, Wallsend.

A 30-year-old man, hiding under a bed in the unit was arrested.

During a search of the unit, police allegedly located and seized a shortened shotgun and ammunition.

He was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with fire firearm in or near public place, acquire etc firearm - subject to prohibition order, and acquire etc ammunition subject to prohibition order.

The man appeared in Newcastle Local Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to reappear tomorrow.
