Time to throw your support being your local sporting clubs

Townsville City Council is encouraging residents to get behind their local sporting clubs as sports kick off again across the city.

Sport and Recreation Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said the best way to support the grassroots clubs is to become active members.

"Our local sporting community – like lots of other industries – took a big hit with COVID-19 restrictions forcing a pause on all sports," Cr Soars said.

"Those restrictions have eased and lots of clubs are starting their competitions back up with COVID Safe Plans in place and they are now looking for members."

Cr Soars said that sports are a great way to get both physical and mental health on track after what has been an exhausting year so far.

"It's normal to be feeling exhausted and drained after a stressful year, but sports are a good way to start socialising again and bring back some normality and routine," he said.

"There is lots of evidence that sport is beneficial to improving mental health and this is the perfect time to make new habits and try something new.

"There are hundreds of sporting clubs across the city covering almost any type of sport you could think of so I am encouraging all residents to think about and research what is available and sign up to get active now."
