Tolmans Hill Park upgrade sets scene for greater nature play

The City of Hobart has commenced work on a major upgrade to Tolmans Hill Park that includes the addition of fully accessible toilets and off-street parking for people with a disability.

“The installation of fully accessible toilets, a roofed shelter area, picnic tables and BBQs will really make this a special place for families and people with a disability,” City of Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said today.

“Tolmans Hill Park is set in stunning native bushland and landscaped to fit in with the spirit of the place.

“These new facilities will make it much easier for families to spend more time outdoors in a natural setting where parents can relax and let their children enjoy Hobart’s beautiful natural environment.

“Research increasingly shows the importance of nature play for children and how time spent playing in natural settings like Tolmans Hill Park can help improve children’s thinking and social skills as well as their creativity.

“This work builds on the initial park design, which created the first purpose-built playground in the Tolmans Hill area four years ago.”

The Tolmans Hill Park upgrade project began on Wednesday 11 May and is expected to be completed by October this year.

It will see the creation of a beautiful new, open-air, roofed shelter area with picnic tables and BBQs.

The design includes fully accessible toilets and new off-street parking for people with a disability.

This $1.3 million upgrade has been made possible through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, which contributed $650 000 to the project.

Most areas of the park will remain open to the public throughout the project, including the bike track and play area, but there will be reduced parking spaces during construction.
