70 Macquarie Street, Hobart:

The Hobart City Council Planning Committee has approved a development application for the William Crowther statue removal and temporary signage for 70 Macquarie Street, Hobart.

This allows for the removal of the Crowther statue, retention of the plinth, and the installation of temporary signage adjacent to the plinth in Franklin Square.

This is a City of Hobart application, with the Hobart City Council as land owner previously approving removal of the statue on 15 August 2022, followed by an approved addendum to the Franklin Square Conservation Management Plan on 24 April 2023.

Removal must comply with conditions set by the Hobart City Council Planning Committee and the Tasmanian Heritage Council, including that the Tasmanian Heritage Council must approve the storage arrangements.

There will now be a 14-day holding period where any appeals against the decision may be lodged with the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
