The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) is monitoring the developing Tropical Low 29U, currently located in the northern Coral Sea.
Tropical Low 29U is expected to begin moving west-southwest during the week and is forecast to approach and cross the Queensland coast between Cooktown and Townsville late in the week.
It has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone from Wednesday onwards, increasing to a moderate chance during Thursday and Friday.
TLDMG Chair, Mayor Nick Dametto, said the TLDMG was actively monitoring the situation and urged residents to stay informed and ready to act if conditions worsen.
"Now, as is normal practice throughout the wet season, is the time for residents to check their emergency plans, ensure their emergency kits are stocked up, and to make sure pets and family members are included in those plans.
"This weather system is looking like it will pose a moderate risk of developing into a cyclone from Thursday and whilst it is on track to make landfall north of Townsville, it is still pertinent we be prepared for whatever Mother Nature might send our way.
"The main concern with this system is the possibility of heavy rainfall across Townsville. Our catchments are already quite wet, so it won't take much additional rain for our rivers and creeks to rise quickly."
The high-risk weather season from November to April brings increased chances of cyclones, storms, and floods across North Queensland.
Each of these events can occur quickly and with little warning, and Councillor Dametto reminded the community that preparation is key:
- Stay informed by bookmarking Council's Disaster Dashboard, the single source of truth during emergencies.
- Have a plan for your household and business, including evacuation routes and how to protect property.
- Prepare your emergency kit with essentials like food, water, medications, and important documents.
"We know all too well how rapidly conditions can change in our region," Cr Dametto said.
"Please take simple steps now to ensure you and your family are ready should the weather deteriorate."
