- $4 million for upgrades to Townsville Sports Precinct.
- Cooling systems to be installed in the multi-purpose indoor courts.
- Part of $52 million for state-owned Sport and Recreation Venues.
The Crisafulli Government has announced the Townsville Sports Precinct will receive $4 million in upgrades.
The improvements will include the installation of a cooling system in its multipurpose indoor courts and upgraded LED field lighting allowing more people to use the facility year-round.
It will also allow the venue to host more Para-sport, regular training and community activities throughout the year.
The popular venue will share in $52 million over four years through the 2025–26 Budget to upgrade, maintain and enhance operations of state-owned Sport and Recreation Venues after a decade of neglect from the former Labor government.
Minister for Sport and Racing and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tim Mander said the upgrades would make the venue even more appealing for visiting teams, in particular para-sports.
"The Townsville Sports Precinct has already played host to NRL, NRLW, Rugby Sevens and Super Rugby teams for training, along with the Aston Villa football team, Queensland Academy of Sport athletics programs and international athletics events," Minister Mander said.
"Townsville is earmarked to host football and sailing events in 2032 and the Precinct is well-placed to be a major pre-Games training venue.
"Most importantly, these upgrades ensure the facility can better serve the Townsville community in the lead up to, and well beyond 2032, making it more inclusive, accessible, and comfortable for all users, all year round."
Member for Townsville Adam Baillie said the Townsville Sports Precinct was an important resource for the community.
"Townsville Sports Precinct is often a hive of activity, used by local schools, sporting and community groups and earlier this year, as an emergency evacuation centre providing refuge for locals during the floods," Mr Baillie said.
"This upgrade will make conditions more comfortable for athletes, spectators and visitors alike, ensuring the Precinct continues to be a vibrant and well-used community asset for years to come."
