The timing of traffic lights are being adjusted to boost safety, reduce travel time and move more people on our roads.
About 400 individual traffic signals are reviewed by our traffic engineers every year, to maximise traffic flow at some of our busiest intersections.
On the Princes Highway, queue lengths on the South Gippsland freeway exit ramps have been reduced, improving average speeds on the freeway during peak hour from 40km/h to 70km/h, and reducing average intersection delays on the Princes Highway by 2 minutes.
On Westall Road, average travel times were reduced by more than 2 minutes in both the peak between the Princes Highway and Heatherton Road, from 9.4 minutes to 6.8 minutes in the morning and 10.3 minutes to 7.5 minutes in the afternoon.
On Millers Road in Altona, from Kororoit Creek Road to Eames Avenue, the average travel time for drivers travelling northbound in the morning has been reduced by 1.3 minutes.
Pedestrians in the CBD will also have a safer journey by increasing the amount of crossing time at high-use intersections, such as the intersection of Bourke and Spencer Streets.
All traffic patterns and crash data are analysed to determine which mode of transport should be prioritised and focus on the safe and efficient movement of people and goods.
