Training for Expert Reviewers of Greenhouse Gas Inventories from Developed Countries in 2022

UN Climate Change News, 15 February 2022 - In 2022, the UN Climate Change secretariat is organizing two rounds of its training programme for the greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory review experts from developed countries and will certify new experts nominated by the national focal points of the UNFCCC.

The review process is an integral part of the transparency arrangements under the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

Transparency is a key element of effective climate action and an important component of increasing climate ambition, which is crucial to prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

Individual reviews are critical for ensuring that the information submitted by countries adheres to relevant reporting guidelines agreed to by the Parties to the Convention.

The first round started on 7 February and will run until 13 April. The second round will take place from 19 April to 17 June 2022.

Participants are expected to gain knowledge on the purpose, scope and approaches necessary for conducting the review of GHG inventories from developed countries.

Successfully certified new experts will become eligible to take part in an international expert team to review information from developed countries on GHG emissions and removals.

In addition, the review process provides good avenue for the countries and their GHG inventory experts to discuss with other countries' experts on how to improve their national GHG inventories.

Therefore, the success of the review process is dependent on the availability of certified experts to join the international expert teams for the reviews. To that end, the secretariat welcomes nomination of new experts from the national focal points.
