Treasurer's credit card and credibility maxed out

Tasmanian Labor
  • Hodgman and Gutwein driving Tasmania into record debt
  • Gutwein announced new tax as recently as last week
  • In Question Time today Peter Gutwein tried his hardest to avoid answering questions on his Government's debt disaster.

Treasury's Fiscal Sustainability Report last week revealed that the Liberals had put the budget on trajectory for up to $30 billion of debt.

Shadow Treasurer David O'Byrne said the Liberals have no leg to stand on when it comes to new taxes.

"When Peter Gutwein is pushed to answer questions about the debt spiral he's put Tasmania into, all we get is hyperventilating about Labor,"

"Peter Gutwein announced a farm tax in the budget, and was forced to backflip following pressure from primary producers, the community and Labor.

"Just last week he announced a 15 per cent Point of Consumption tax.

"Despite constant boasting, Peter Gutwein has been found out as a financial charlatan who has put Tasmania's future on the credit card.

"Tasmanians don't want to hear the Government spending their day talking about Labor to create a diversion from the human cost of their cuts, they deserve a Government focused on delivering a balanced budget that ensures essential services, like health and housing, are available for those who need it."

    David O'Byrne MP

    Shadow Treasurer
