Truck Driver Arrested On Freeway For False Statements

A Victorian truck driver was stopped on the South Eastern Freeway this morning and arrested for driving offences.

Officers from SAPOL's Heavy Vehicle Enforcement Unit initially stopped the B-double truck at Wingfield about 9.15am today, Thursday 16 April. At that time, it will be alleged the driver failed to present a work diary and made false statements about the work he was carrying out.

Subsequent inquiries identified that he had travelled from Melbourne to Adelaide overnight and continued to work throughout the day, presenting a significant fatigue risk to himself and other road users. The driver was directed to cease work immediately.

However, he continued to drive and was intercepted by police a second time on the South Eastern Freeway at Petwood about 11.45am.

The 23-year-old Victorian man was arrested and charged with making false statements to an authorised officer, failing to take required rest, exceeding work hours and disobeying a direction. He was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court at a later date.
