Police are urging motorists to avoid Mount Ousley Road at Mount Ousley following an apparent head-on collision this morning involving two semi-trailers, NSW Police say.
Around 10.45am, police from the Wollongong Local Area Command were alerted about the crash in the south-bound lanes of the roadway.
The collision caused one rig to jack-knife into the north-bound lanes and as a result, traffic in both directions has been blocked.
One of the trucks, carrying dirt, rolled onto its side, trapping its driver.
He has since been released.
Both drivers have been assessed by ambulance officers and treated for minor injuries.
Police are prioritising the removal of up to 60 head of cattle on a third semi-trailer, stuck in traffic near the crash scene.
North-bound traffic is reportedly banked back to the University of Wollongong and is being directed to Memorial Drive.
South-bound traffic is being filtered to Mount Pleasant Road and by the Sutherland Highway Patrol to Lawrence Hargrave Drive.
Roads and Maritime Services has agreed to re-open Bulli Pass, currently closed for development, to alleviate the traffic backlog.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by police.
