Councillor Darriea Turley has taken top honours at the Ministers' Awards for Women in Local Government this week.
The annual awards recognise the invaluable contribution and achievements of women in the local government sector who are helping increase the participation and advancement of women and breaking down gender stereotypes.
This year's awards attracted a record number of nominations, with the winners celebrated at a ceremony at Parliament House on Wednesday co-hosted by Minister for Local Government Ron Hoenig and Minister for Women Jodie Harrison.
Cr Turley took out the Councillor Lilliane Brady OAM Award, which is determined by the Minister to recognise and honour the dedication and tireless work of a female council staff member or elected representative.
Mayor Turley said she was stunned by the win, and paid tribute the late Lilliane Brady after receiving the award.
"Lilliane was such a strong advocate for her community, she would be the leader at the front of protest marches wanting more for her rural community," said Cr Turley.
"She would always be the strongest voice in the room, taking on any Minister about what is best for her community, and I'm honoured to have known her and to receive this award.
"It is critical that we recognise the role of women in Local Government, both as elected members and as staff, as they contribute to the creation of strong, liveable communities for all of us to enjoy."
