A Weston man who usually plays Powerball is celebrating a fortunate twist of fate that led him to a million-dollar windfall Saturday Lotto's draw 4397 on September 9, 2023. When the man found that he had missed the Powerball draw, he decided to purchase a Saturday Lotto ticket instead—a decision that would change his life.
"I don’t even normally play Saturday Lotto! I came in the other day to purchase a Powerball ticket because that’s the game I usually play, and they said the draw had already closed.
“I told them to give me a Saturday Lotto ticket instead and I said I’d see how I’d go.
“It’s like the universe was telling me to go and get a Saturday Lotto ticket!", says The Hunter Region resident.
The man discovered his newfound fortune when he went to Weston Discount Pharmacy, the same store where he had purchased his lottery ticket, to buy Berocca.
"Then I remembered that I had my Saturday Lotto ticket sitting in the car door. I whizzed back to the car and grabbed it out," he recounted.
"Two team members looked at each other, and that's when I thought something was up."
"She turned to me and said, ‘you might want to get a chair. I think you’ve won division one!’".
The Hunter Region resident held an unregistered ticket, forcing lottery officials to wait for him to come forward.
The lucky man plans to use his earnings to support his family.
"I'll definitely help my kids and grandchildren out. They mean the world to me," he said.
Retirement is also on the table, as well as treating his wife to her favorite drink, a margarita.
Lesley Lester, the lottery manager at Weston Discount Pharmacy, expressed delight over the man's win, stating,
"This is our first [division one winning entry] since taking over the terminal in the Weston region. Our customer is a local and a regular, which is a win-win!"
The nationwide Saturday Lotto draw 4397 created 10 new millionaires, five of whom are from New South Wales, on 9 September.
The winning numbers for the draw were 11, 9, 14, 29, 7, and 15, along with supplementary numbers 17 and 23.
