Two charged over assault of police in Newcastle

Two men have been charged after police were allegedly assaulted in Newcastle, NSW Police say.

About 8.30pm yesterday (Sunday 29 April 2018), a 23-year-old man and a 52-year-old man allegedly began fighting patrons inside a licenced premises on Morgan Street, Merewether.

The pair were ejected from the hotel and waited outside.

Police attended a short time later, and they allegedly refused to provide police with their details and tried to leave the scene.

Police attempted to arrest the men; however they allegedly resisted and assaulted a senior constable, who was was bitten on his thigh and sustained an injury to his thumb and elbow.

The pair were arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station.

The injured officer was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment before terminating his shift.

The younger man was charged with affray, assault police occasioning actual bodily harm, assault police (x2), resist arrest, fail to quit licensed premises, remain in vicinity of licensed premises, and offensive language.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Monday 30 April 2018).

The older man was charged with affray, resist arrest, fail to quit licensed premises, remain in vicinity of licensed premises, offensive language and aggravated littering.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 17 May 2018.
