Two children die after house fire west of Byron Bay

Twin girls have died after a fire inside a house west of Byron Bay this morning.

Emergency services were called to the single-storey property on Mafeking Road, Goonengarry, shortly after 4am (Sunday 7 November 2021), responding to reports two children were suffering from smoke inhalation.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District and NSW Ambulance paramedics performed CPR on both children; however, the four-year-old girls were unable to be revived.

A woman is also being treated for shock.

The building is part of a multiple-occupancy community, about 30km west of Byron Bay.

Detectives from Tweed/Byron PD will be working with fire investigators to determine the cause of the blaze, but initial reports indicate a candle may have been left burning inside the home.
