Two dead in single vehicle crash in Morisset

Police are conducting an investigation after two people died in a single vehicle crash in the Lake Macquarie area, NSW Police say.

Just after 1.30am tomorrow, emergency services were called to Marconi Road, near Macquarie Street, Morisset, following reports a car struck a power pole before catching alight.

Upon arrival, the vehicle was engulfed in flames and was extinguished by Fire & Rescue NSW.

After the fire was extinguished, police located the bodies of the driver and passenger inside the vehicle.

Both are yet to be formally identified.

Officers attached to Lake Macquarie Local Area Command established a crime scene and commenced and investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
