Two inmates charged with attempted murder at Kempsey

Two inmates have been charged with attempted murder after an alleged stabbing at a correctional centre yesterday.

About 3.15pm (Wednesday 8 April 2020), emergency services were called to a correctional facility at Kempsey, following reports an inmate had suffered multiple stab wounds.

Police will allege two inmates – aged 50 and 27 – approached the cell of a 26-year-old man before he was stabbed several times in the neck, chest and back.

The injured man was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Officers from Mid North Coast Police District attended a short time later and established a crime scene.

The two men – aged 50 and 27 – were arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Both were refused bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court via AVL today (Friday 9 April 2020).
